The short answer: Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is hiring 350 Probationary Engineers: 200 in Electronics and 150 in Mechanical. The last date to apply online is 18 November 2026, 11:59 PM (BEL advertisement). You need a first-class B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc Engineering degree in an eligible branch, and you must be 25 or younger on 1 October 2026 if you are in the general or EWS category. The computer-based test (CBT) is tentatively on 22 December 2026.

Every fact on this page comes from BEL's own advertisement, Advt No. 17556/HR/All-India/2026, dated 28 October 2026. Here is what it says, in plain words, plus a plan to get ready for the test.

What is the BEL Probationary Engineer post?

BEL is a government company under the Ministry of Defence. Its advertisement calls it "a Navaratna PSU and India's premier Professional Electronics Company", with products such as radars, military communication and naval systems (BEL advertisement).

The Probationary Engineer post is an entry-level engineering job at the E-II grade. BEL says the jobs are in "Production/Support Services departments" at its units (BEL advertisement).

BEL says the number of posts in each branch "may be increased or decreased" based on its needs at the time of hiring.

Who can apply?

Branch and degree

You need a B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc Engineering (4 years) degree from an AICTE-approved college in one of these branches (BEL advertisement):

  • Electronics posts: Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Electronics and Telecommunication, Communication, or Telecommunication.
  • Mechanical posts: Mechanical.

A first class in AMIE, AMIETE or GIETE in these branches is also accepted.

BEL adds one firm line: "Other equivalent disciplines and dual specializations will NOT be considered." So if your branch is not on the list, such as Computer Science or IT, you are not eligible for this round.

If that's you, look at other open routes. Graduates from 2024 to 2026 can check our Infosys SP and DSE off-campus guide. Students finishing in 2027 to 2030 can look at TCS CodeVita Season 14, a coding contest run by TCS.

Marks

  • General, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates need a first class.
  • SC, ST and PwBD candidates need a pass class.

If your college gives a CGPA, BEL says you must use your university's own conversion formula. You will need to show that conversion certificate at the interview, or your application may be rejected (BEL advertisement).

Age

The upper age limit is 25 years for general and EWS candidates, counted on 1 October 2026. BEL allows these relaxations (BEL advertisement):

CategoryExtra years allowed
OBC (NCL)3
SC / ST5
PwBD10
PwBD + OBC (NCL)13
PwBD + SC/ST15
Ex-servicemen5

Your class 10 or 12 certificate is the only accepted proof of date of birth. Only Indian nationals can apply.

One medical rule to know early

BEL's advertisement says candidates with colour blindness are "not suitable" for the Probationary Engineer post in Electronics or Mechanical, as per its medical standards (BEL advertisement). If you aren't sure, get a simple eye test before you apply.

BEL says the CBT will be held "tentatively" on 22 December and that it "reserves the right to change the date". It also says to apply early and "not to wait till the last date", because it will not be responsible for last-minute rush. Our advice: finish your application by 15 November.

How selection works

There are two stages: a computer-based test, then an interview (BEL advertisement).

  • Weightage: the CBT counts for 85 marks and the interview for 15 marks.
  • Shortlist: BEL calls candidates to interview in a 1:5 ratio, discipline-wise and category-wise. That means about five people are called for each post.
  • Qualifying marks: you must score at least 35% (General, OBC, EWS) or 30% (SC, ST, PwBD) in the CBT and in the interview, separately.

The 85:15 split tells you where to spend your effort. The CBT decides most of the result.

After selection, BEL says new engineers do six months of orientation or on-the-job training and must sign a service agreement to serve BEL for two years (BEL advertisement). Read that clause in the advertisement before you apply.

CBT pattern and syllabus

Here is the test pattern from the advertisement (BEL advertisement):

PartDetail
Duration120 minutes
Questions125 in total
Technical100 questions
General aptitude and reasoning25 questions
Marks1 per question
Negative marking1/4 mark cut for each wrong answer
LanguageEnglish and Hindi

That works out to just under one minute per question.

The negative marking matters. With a quarter mark lost per wrong answer, guessing blindly can hurt you. Unanswered and "marked for review" questions get zero, not a minus.

On the syllabus, BEL says the technical questions come from "the core engineering subjects that candidates have studied as part of their respective engineering disciplines". The aptitude section will "assess analytical and reasoning abilities". BEL does not publish a topic-by-topic list in the advertisement, so use your own degree curriculum as the guide.

How to apply

Apply only through the "Click here to apply" link next to the Probationary Engineer notice on BEL's Job Notifications page. BEL's advertisement describes two steps (BEL advertisement):

  1. Register. Enter your personal and contact details. Verify the OTPs sent to your phone and email. You will get an Application Sequence Number and password.
  2. Fill in the application. Log in again and add your details, education, and a photo and signature. Check the preview, then submit. Candidates who have a fee are sent to the payment page after submitting.

Keep these ready before you start:

  • a personal email and mobile number you will keep using,
  • a recent passport-size colour photo on a white background, no older than three months, as a JPG of 100–200 KB,
  • your signature in black ink on white paper, scanned as a JPG of 80–150 KB, and
  • your caste, EWS or PwBD certificate in BEL's format, if you claim a category.

Two warnings from BEL. Once you submit, you can't edit the form, and your category can't be changed. Also, a fee applies to some categories, and BEL says it is non-refundable. SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates are exempt, according to the advertisement. Check the fee section of the advertisement for your own category.

After you submit, print or save your application form. BEL says that option disappears after the last date.

A 7-week plan to 22 December

Week 1 (now to 9 Nov): Check and apply. Read the full advertisement. Confirm your branch, marks and age. Get your CGPA conversion certificate if you need one. Apply by 15 November at the latest.

Week 2 (10–16 Nov): Map your syllabus. List the core subjects from your degree. Mark each one strong, okay or weak.

Weeks 3–4 (17–30 Nov): Core subjects, part one. For Electronics, you might start with analog and digital electronics, networks, and signals. For Mechanical, you might start with strength of materials, thermodynamics and theory of machines. Make one page of formulas for each subject.

Week 5 (1–7 Dec): Core subjects, part two. Cover the subjects you marked weak. Solve questions in sets of 25 against a timer.

Week 6 (8–14 Dec): Aptitude and reasoning. Practise number series, percentages, ratios, and simple logic puzzles. This section is only 25 questions, so keep it short each day.

Week 7 (15–21 Dec): Full mocks. Do at least three full 125-question, 120-minute practice tests. Score them with the quarter-mark penalty. Learn when to skip a question you can't answer.

If you clear the CBT, our placement preparation plan has tips for the interview stage.

How to stay safe

Edufusion is not connected to BEL and does not take applications. Apply only through bel-india.in.

BEL's advertisement says it "does not demand or charge any fee or request for money deposits at any stage of the recruitment process other than the application fee mentioned in this advertisement" (BEL advertisement). It warns job seekers "not to be misled by any communication made by fraudsters". If anyone asks you for money to get selected, it is a scam.

What we could not verify

  • The exact CBT date. BEL calls 22 December "tentative".
  • A topic-by-topic syllabus. The advertisement only says core engineering subjects plus aptitude.
  • Whether EWS candidates are exempt from the fee. One part of the advertisement lists EWS among the exempt groups, and other parts do not. Check with BEL's helpdesk if this applies to you.
  • How many people will apply. BEL does not say.

We will update this page if BEL posts a corrigendum or changes the test date.
