The short answer: To prepare for placements in 2 months, spend the first two weeks making every resume line provable, the next three to four weeks on timed tests and the skills your target roles name (now often including AI tools), and the last two weeks on mock interviews. Start your placement preparation now. At IIT Madras, for example, tests have run since 14 September 2026 and interviews start on 1 December, so check your own college's calendar today.
You may have heard that placement season starts on 1 December. At the older IITs, that's only when interviews start. At IIT Madras, registration, resume checks and tests began weeks ago. Wait for December, and you'll miss rounds that are already over.
This guide uses this season's official 2026–27 rules from IIT Madras and NIT Warangal, plus what named placement heads told The Economic Times in October. You'll get an 8-week plan and a checklist to protect your offer.
When does placement season 2026–27 actually start?
It depends on your college, and for many students it has already started. IIT Madras's 2026–27 guidelines list student registration from 14 to 17 August, pre-placement talks and tests from 14 September, and interviews from 1 December. A second phase runs from January to April (IIT Madras, Placements 2026-27 guidelines).
Other colleges run on different clocks. NIT Sikkim's placement cell lists its first slot as 10 August to 26 December 2026, and a second slot from 19 January to June 2027 (NIT Sikkim Training & Placement Cell, 10 Aug 2026). At IIT Dhanbad, regular campus placements start on the night of 30 November, and the 2027 batch already had about 200 PPOs by late October (as reported by Hindustan, 28 Oct 2026).
This week, find and read your college's placement calendar and policy.
What are recruiters looking for this season?
Strong basics, plus proof that you can work with AI tools. Placement heads at three IITs told The Economic Times that AI skills count for more this season, while fundamentals still matter (as reported by The Economic Times, 17 Oct 2026):
- Manjesh K. Singh, who chairs IIT Kanpur's students' placement committee, said: "we're also seeing AI skills become part of role descriptions in software, analytics, finance and even core engineering."
- John Jose of IIT Guwahati said: "New roles are coming that were not available last year."
- Sanjay Gupta of IIT Kharagpur described "continued demand for strong fundamental areas of core engineering, quantitative, financial and managerial domains."
Job-portal data points the same way. In September 2026, Naukri found fresher hiring up just 1% from a year earlier, while fresher hiring for AI/ML roles grew 19% (Naukri JobSpeak, 6 Oct 2026; job-portal data). For the company-by-company picture, see our fresher hiring 2026 analysis.
Keep your basics sharp, and show one thing you did well with AI tools.
What should your 8-week placement preparation plan look like?
Work backwards from your first interview day. The first six weeks are for proof, tests and practice, and the last two are for interviews.
| Week | Focus | Why now |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read your college's placement policy. List your target roles. Collect proof for every resume line. | Resumes without proof can be rejected (IIT Madras). |
| 2 | Finish one resume per role type. Do one timed aptitude test to find your weak areas. | You'll know what to practise for the next four weeks. |
| 3–4 | Daily timed practice: quant, logical reasoning, and coding or core subjects for your roles. | Tests decide who gets to the interview. |
| 5 | Build or polish one small project that uses an AI tool, and write up what you checked. | Recruiters are naming AI skills in non-AI roles (ET, 17 Oct 2026). |
| 6 | Mock interviews and group discussions. Rank your company preferences carefully. | At IIT Madras, preferences are due by 29 November and the first preference is binding. |
| 7–8 | Interview days: rest, review, and follow your offer rules. | One offer usually ends your season. |
Use week 2 to find your gaps. To test the skill, try a logical reasoning online test.
Starting this week? If your interviews start on 1 December, you have about four and a half weeks, not eight. Keep the order, but move faster: proof and resumes in week 1, tests and your AI project in weeks 2 to 4, and mock interviews in late November. If your college runs later, use all eight weeks.
How do you make every line on your resume provable?
Treat every line as a claim someone will check. IIT Madras's 2026–27 rules say students "must submit valid proof for every point mentioned in their resume" and that "any point without supporting proof or certification will not be permitted on the resume." False information can get a student expelled from the placement process (IIT Madras, Placements 2026-27 guidelines). NIT Warangal's policy says incorrect academic details can lead to being debarred (NIT Warangal, Placement Policy: 2026-27).
What to do:
- Keep a proof folder. Add certificates, internship letters, project links and screenshots, one file per resume line.
- Make role-specific versions. IIT Madras allows up to 5 fixed resumes, plus a master resume holding every point and its proof.
- Lead with internships if you have them. Nearly six in ten fresher job postings now prefer or require internship experience (as reported by Business Today, 6 Aug 2026, citing foundit; job-portal data).
- Cut anything you can't explain in an interview. If you can't talk about a line for two minutes, remove it.
How do you prepare for tests, GDs and interviews?
Prepare for three or four rounds, and don't apply casually. IIT Madras says companies "typically select students after 3–4 stages," usually a resume shortlist, a test, a group discussion and an interview (IIT Madras, Placements 2026-27 guidelines).
Three rules change how you should plan:
- You usually can't drop out midway. At IIT Madras, students can't withdraw from a company's process after taking its test. At NIT Warangal, you can't withdraw once you've applied to a company (NIT Warangal policy). Apply only where you'd accept the job.
- Attendance is enforced. Skipping a test or GD you're shortlisted for, without a valid reason, brings disciplinary action at IIT Madras.
- Interviews are short. Each interview round at IIT Madras is capped at one hour, and companies can't pressure candidates or negotiate offer terms with them.
For GDs, practise making one clear point, backed by a fact, in under a minute. For interviews, prepare a two-minute story for each project: the problem, what you did, what you checked, and what you'd change.
How to prepare for aptitude for placements
Practise the three skills most aptitude tests check: numbers, words and reasoning. TCS's NQT, for example, starts with numerical, verbal and reasoning sections of 25 minutes each (TCS NQT hiring page). Other tests differ, so read each company's selection details before its test.
- Practise in short timed sets. Do one every day.
- Track your mistakes. Note the question types you get wrong, and redo them a week later.
To test the skill, try a quantitative aptitude online test.
Should you accept a PPO now or wait for 1 December?
Read the PPO type before you decide, because the rules differ. Internships are turning into more pre-placement offers (PPOs) this year. "Companies are increasingly using internships to assess students before extending PPOs," John Jose of IIT Guwahati said (as reported by The Economic Times, 17 Oct 2026).
At IIT Madras (2026-27 guidelines):
- Closed PPOs must be accepted or rejected by a deadline. If you accept, you can't sit for placements. They can be issued only before 22 November 2026. For PPOs issued on or after 15 September, you get 7 days to decide.
- Open PPOs let you sit for placements up to the slot of the company that offered the PPO, but only if that company has told the placement office it allows this.
NIT Warangal is stricter: once a PPO is extended, "rejection of the offer is not permitted". You can say no in writing before it's issued. If it still comes, you may be allowed to decline (NIT Warangal, Placement Policy: 2026-27).
Before you decide, ask your placement office three questions: Is this PPO open or closed? What's my deadline? What can I still apply for if I accept?
How do the one-offer and 24-hour rules work on interview day?
Fast, and usually with no second chance. Under IIT Madras's "One Student, One Offer" rule, you can accept at most one placement offer. You're deregistered right after the slot in which you get your first offer (IIT Madras, Placements 2026-27 guidelines).
Three details matter most:
- 24 hours to decide. You have 24 hours from the offer announcement to accept or reject it. If you don't respond, the offer is treated as rejected.
- Preferences lock on 29 November. You must rank every company slot you can interview for. If your first-preference company makes an offer, you must accept it.
- Offer letters come later. Companies will issue offer letters before the end of March 2027.
NIT Warangal also follows "One Student, One Job": once you're placed, you can't take part in later drives. Rank only companies you'd genuinely join.
How safe is a campus offer, and how do you protect yourself?
Most offers are honoured, but not all. Last season, more than 150 offers to 2026 graduates went unhonoured across 23 IITs. The All IITs Placement Committee decided to stop cooperating with 22 companies for the next two placement seasons (as reported by The Times of India, 25 Sep 2026, citing The Economic Times). The committee's convenor, John Jose, said about 20–30% of the affected students later found jobs through referrals from their placement offices.
IIT Madras tells students to contact their department placement team if an offer is revoked unconditionally or for reasons not stated earlier, or if a company doesn't stick to its job description or agreed terms (IIT Madras guidelines).
Offer-safety checklist
- Get the offer in writing, and save the job description the company filed.
- Note the expected joining date and who your company contact is.
- Route offer and PPO messages through your placement office. IIT Madras requires this for PPOs, and NIT Warangal tells students not to contact company HR directly unless authorised.
- Check the company's recent news before your preferences lock.
- Don't sign anything that changes the role or terms without telling your placement office.
- If your joining date slips, ask for a new date in writing and tell your placement office.
- If an offer is withdrawn, report it at once. Ask whether you can return to placements, since the All IITs Placement Committee left that decision to each institute (as reported by The Times of India, 2 Oct 2026).
- Keep your resume and proof folder ready for off-campus options.
Not at an IIT? What changes?
The steps stay the same, but your dates and rules may differ, as NIT Sikkim's long season and NIT Warangal's strict PPO rules show (see above).
Three things to do differently:
- Ask for your college's written policy. Look for the offer rules, PPO rules and the penalties for skipping rounds.
- Track your best-fit companies' visit dates. In a long season, the right company may come late.
- Apply off-campus too. This helps most if your college's season starts late.
How we researched this
Edufusion Editorial read the official 2026–27 placement documents of IIT Madras and NIT Warangal, NIT Sikkim's published placement calendar, a Hindustan report on IIT Dhanbad, and TCS's official hiring page. We added named quotes from placement heads as reported by The Economic Times, offer-withdrawal figures as reported by The Times of India, and job-portal data from Naukri and foundit, labelled as such. Rules differ by college, so treat IIT Madras as an example, not a rule for everyone. We left out claims from unnamed sources. Read our editorial standards.
Questions
When should you start preparing for placements?
Start before your college's placement registration opens, because tests can begin long before interviews. At IIT Madras, registration ran from 14 to 17 August 2026, tests started on 14 September, and interviews start on 1 December (IIT Madras guidelines). Find your own college's dates, then plan backwards from them.
Can you prepare for placements in 3 months?
Yes, and three months gives you more room than the 8-week plan above. Keep the same order: proof first, then timed tests and skills, then mock interviews. At IIT Madras, Phase 1 tests run from mid-September to the end of November (IIT Madras guidelines), so start before they do.
How much CGPA is required for placement?
There's no single number, because each company sets its own cut-off. IIT Madras's 2026–27 eligibility rules list backlog and credit limits, not a CGPA (IIT Madras guidelines). NIT Warangal shares each company's own criteria with students (NIT Warangal policy). TCS's 2026 NQT hiring page, for example, asks for 60% or equivalent CGPA in Class 10, 12 and your degree (TCS).
Is 2 months enough to prepare for placements?
Yes, if you start now and focus. At IIT Madras, tests have run since 14 September 2026 and interviews start on 1 December (IIT Madras guidelines), so students there now have about four and a half weeks before interviews. The season goes on after that, with Phase 2 from January to April. Spend your time on provable resume lines, timed tests and mock interviews, not on starting new courses.
What skills are required for campus placement in 2026?
Strong basics in aptitude, communication and your core subject, plus some practical AI skill. Naukri found fresher hiring for AI/ML roles up 19% in September 2026, against 1% for freshers overall (Naukri JobSpeak, 6 Oct 2026; job-portal data). Show one project where you used AI tools and checked the output.
How do I prepare for a campus placement interview?
Prepare a two-minute story for every project and resume line: the problem, your work, what you checked and what you learned. At IIT Madras, each round is capped at one hour (IIT Madras guidelines). Do at least three mock interviews before your first real one.
Can I reject a PPO and sit for placements?
It depends on your college and the PPO type. At IIT Madras, you get 7 days to decide on a closed PPO issued on or after 15 September 2026, and accepting it ends your placement season (IIT Madras guidelines). At NIT Warangal, you usually can't reject a PPO once it's extended.
What happens if a company withdraws my campus offer?
Tell your placement office at once and ask whether you can return to placements. Last season, more than 150 offers went unhonoured across 23 IITs, and 22 companies face a two-season restriction (as reported by The Times of India, 25 Sep 2026). Keep applying off-campus too.
