Forward Deployed Engineer in India: Can Freshers Get In?
Forward deployed engineer roles span experience levels. Read 2 Indian employer examples, the skills they ask for, and what freshers should check first.

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) works with customers to build and put software to use; GlobalLogic's role description, posted 14 October 2026, shows that mix of engineering and client work. For an Indian fresher, the first question is whether the opening accepts beginners: Wipro's Chennai listing, posted 16 October 2026, asks for 3–5 years of experience.
This guide explains the news behind the title, checks Indian employer examples, and suggests a small project to practise the work. Use it to decide what to learn and which openings deserve a closer look.
Why is the forward deployed engineer role in the news?
Recent coverage reports a sharp rise in Indian job postings for this title. But the dates and the type of data matter before you draw a career conclusion.
Indeed's Indian FDE postings rose 1,807% year on year in June 2026, according to The Indian Express, updated 15 October 2026. That is a comparison with June 2025. It is not a measure of how many graduates joined a company this month.
EdexLive, updated 18 October 2026, reports that postings remained nearly sixteen times higher year on year in July and more than six times higher in August. Both articles describe the same Indeed data. They are not separate studies confirming the size of the whole market.
Read this as a reason to investigate the role, not proof that an entry-level opening awaits you. A posting trend cannot tell you whether you meet a particular employer's needs.
For the wider context, see our guide to fresher hiring in India. Here, the focus is narrower: what this job involves and how to assess it.
What would the work look like in practice?
Think about a customer problem that needs working software. In the GlobalLogic example, the engineer works within client teams, builds solutions and explains technical choices to business leaders, according to its employer description, posted 14 October 2026.
To picture that work, consider this invented practice scenario. A college placement team has a folder of notices. Students keep asking which deadline applies to them. The team wants a tool that helps students find the right notice.
Before writing code, ask what makes the current process hard. Are old notices mixed with new ones? Do students miss changes? Who should resolve a conflict between documents? Is a better search page enough?
Then define a small outcome: a student should be able to find the current notice and see where the answer came from. Build around that outcome. Do not start by choosing the most complex artificial intelligence (AI) tool you know.
This is a learning exercise, not a description of a real deployment. Its purpose is to make you practise the full path from a vague request to something another person can use.
Can freshers apply for forward deployed engineer jobs in India?
Use each employer's eligibility rules to decide. The title alone does not establish that an opening is suitable for a new graduate.
The employer pages checked for this guide show different levels of experience:
- Wipro, Chennai: the listing asks for 3–5 years and names generative AI for internet software products as a required skill. Source: Wipro, posted 16 October 2026; checked 21 October 2026.
- GlobalLogic, India: this is a senior role asking for 15+ years in areas such as software engineering or architecture. Source: Hitachi Careers, posted 14 October 2026; checked 21 October 2026.
Neither example is an entry-level recommendation. They also do not prove that every FDE role requires extensive experience. This is a small set of examples, not a survey of all vacancies.
If a listing is silent about experience, ask the recruiter whether new graduates qualify. Do not read a missing requirement as an invitation. If the employer clearly requires experience you do not have, look for a graduate or trainee opening instead.
Our advice is to separate learning from applying. You can practise customer-focused engineering now while selecting roles whose stated requirements you actually meet.
Which forward deployed engineer skills should you practise?
Start with a skill you can demonstrate in a working project. Use the target job description to choose the next skill, rather than trying to learn every tool mentioned in career posts.
For example, the senior GlobalLogic listing includes work with data retrieval, system integration and evaluation, alongside client communication. See Hitachi Careers, 14 October 2026. That is a demanding employer example, not a beginner syllabus.
The following is our suggested practice plan. It is not a hiring test or a promise that completing it will qualify you for a role.
Learn to describe the problem
Write a short brief before you build. Name the user, the task they want to finish, and what a useful result would look like. Include what the project will leave out.
Try explaining the brief to someone outside your course. Ask them to describe the task back to you. Revise any sentence they cannot follow. Keep the brief beside your code so you can check whether new features serve the original need.
Build something you can explain
Choose a language you already know. Practise reading data, checking inputs, showing clear errors and saving changes. Write down how another person can run the project.
If you use AI while coding, review the output and explain each part in your own words. Change an input and predict what should happen. When the result surprises you, trace the problem before adding more features.
Check the result, then explain the trade-offs
Make a small set of test cases before the final demo. Include a normal request, missing data and a request the tool should decline. Record the expected result beside the actual result.
Then practise explaining a choice: why you kept the design simple, what you tested, and what remains uncertain. Aim to make the reasoning clear to a person who will use the tool, not just someone who can read the code.
What project could a fresher build to practise this work?
Build the placement-notice helper from the earlier example. Treat it as a portfolio exercise with invented or public sample material, and keep its scope small enough to finish and check.
Start by writing the boundaries. The helper should find notices and show their source. It should not decide who gets a job, change an application, or send messages on a student's behalf.
Create sample notices with clear dates and labels. Include an expired notice, a revised deadline and a question with no answer in the documents. Label all invented material as sample data so a reader cannot mistake it for a real campus announcement.
Build a simple search version first. Let the user open the source document and see its date. Ask a classmate to try a task without coaching them through every click.
If you choose to add an AI answer feature, require it to point to the source passage. Test whether the answer agrees with that passage. For missing or conflicting information, design a response that asks the user to check the notice owner.
Keep a test log. Record what you asked, what you expected, what happened and what you changed. Include failures in the write-up. Do not turn results from invented examples into claims about real students or employers.
Finish with a short handover note. Explain setup, known limits, how to add a notice and how to correct a bad result. Have someone follow that note from the start. Use their questions to improve it.
The goal of this exercise is to show your decisions clearly. Present the problem, the working result, the checks and the remaining limits. Avoid claiming that a neat demo proves you can run a large client system.
How should you choose openings and prepare to apply?
Begin with the official employer page and compare its requirements with evidence from your own work. Keep a private application note rather than relying on the job title or a saved social post.
For each opening, record the location, experience requirement, work arrangement and tasks you understand. Note any gap that needs a recruiter answer. Reopen the listing before applying, especially if you first found it through a repost.
Use this checklist to guide your reading:
- Does the role explicitly accept your experience level?
- Can you explain a project related to the work described?
- Which requirements are essential, and which are optional?
- Are client visits, travel or support duties stated clearly?
- Who would review your work while you learn?
Treat unclear details as questions, not assumptions. If travel is not mentioned, ask. If the work is called hybrid, ask what that means for the team. If the description mixes several roles, ask which tasks would take most of your time.
For your application, choose a project you can discuss honestly. Explain the user problem, your own contribution, a failure you found and the change you made. Label personal work as personal work; do not present a classroom exercise as a client engagement.
For interview practice, ask a friend to change the brief halfway through your explanation. Try responding with questions before proposing a fix. This is our suggested exercise for practising judgment, not a claim about any company's interview process.
What should you do next?
Choose an eligible opening to study and a small project to complete. Use the job description to find a specific gap in your work, then decide how you will practise and demonstrate that skill.
If the FDE openings you find are too senior, keep looking at graduate roles that fit your current level. You do not need to wait for a particular title to practise clear problem-solving, testing and user communication.
Save your project brief, test notes and handover guide together. Review them before each application. They give you concrete material to explain, without needing to make claims about skills you have not yet used.
Let the employer's requirements guide where you apply. Let the project show what you can do today.
Questions
What is a forward deployed engineer?
A forward deployed engineer combines software work with direct customer problem-solving. GlobalLogic's example includes building within client teams and explaining technical choices, as described in its listing dated 14 October 2026. Read the particular employer's description before assuming that every job with this title has the same duties.
Can a fresher apply for an FDE role in India?
Check whether the specific employer accepts new graduates before applying. The Wipro listing dated 16 October 2026 asks for 3–5 years, so it is not an entry-level example. That requirement does not establish a rule for every employer; ask about eligibility when a different listing is unclear.
Does the rise in FDE postings mean more fresher jobs?
The cited data does not establish that conclusion. EdexLive's report, updated 18 October 2026, concerns Indeed job postings, not a count of new graduates hired. Use it as context for exploring the role, then check the experience requirements and current status of each opening you find.
Should I learn every AI tool before applying?
Our advice is to use an eligible job's requirements to set your priorities. Start with a project you can build, test and explain, then add a tool when the work calls for it. Do not present a list of tools you have tried as proof that you can deliver a complete solution.
What should an FDE practice project show?
We suggest showing a clear user problem, a working result and a record of your checks. Include a case that failed and explain what you changed. Label sample data honestly, document the limits, and write setup notes that another person can follow without needing you beside them throughout the demo.
How should I prepare to discuss my project in an interview?
Practise explaining why you built it, what you personally did and how you checked the result. Ask a friend to question a design choice or change the brief. This is a suggested practice exercise, not a description of an employer's interview or a promise of what questions you will receive.
